Two weeks ago I started a new job working for a summer program on campus for incoming freshmen college students. As part of the job, I have been given housing and access to dining services. At first glance, this seemed like a FANTABULOUS deal–free housing AND food! What more could one ask for? Well, everything that’s free is not always good for you!
Fast forward two weeks and I have officially QUIT eating dorm food. It made me bloated, gassy, and irritated–even when I ate SALAD! LOL This was a hard choice to make as one reason I decided to take the job was the opportunity to save money because I have virtually NO expenses. What I have found is that sacrificing my health for free food is just not worth it!
Luckily, the dorm I live in has a STOVE (with oven) and a full size REFRIGERATOR. Yesterday, I made roasted chicken and jicama slaw. Today I made a scallop stir fry with sweet onions and red peppers with a broccoli/cauliflower/carrot blend on the side. Since I have been cooking, my digestive system is quite happy! :-)
This week also marked the start of my official group CrossFit classes! Last week, I finished my individual trial classes. I attended class yesterday and today and I will admit, CrossFit is no joke. It’s hard. For me, its more of a mental challenge then anything. This week, I felt like I did when I started boot camp for the first time–out of my league. Even the familiar exercises I used to do are difficult. I’m not sure why.
I know it will get better with time. The trainers and the other CrossFitters are so encouraging.
The next thing I have to work on is getting adequate sleep. Currently, my work shift is from 3-11pm. I am usually in bed by 11:30pm. I get up at 5:30am to go to my 6:30am CrossFit class (when I get into a groove, I hope to be able to get up by 5:45am and be out the door by 6. Class is about 20 min away.) Right now, that’s only 6 hours. I do best on 7-8. Not sure how this is going to work seeing as though I have at least 6 more weeks of this summer job. I took a nap midday today and will see how that goes…
This post has been really unorganized–a random splattering my thoughts. That’s kind of the state of my brain these days…unorganized. I’m a tad too busy and little stressed. I’m working on it though.
